Meaning, that if someone didn't have the gaming addiction/compulsion, then it would be something else. Especially if games are compensating for some lack in their life. If they weren't gaming, maybe they'd be gambling, or drinking, or cutting. Whatever. I am, by no means, qualified to make this determination, I just speak from life experiences and aqcuantances I've had over the years. Also, I tried following that URL you left in your comment and keep getting a "not found" message. I would really love to read your post if you have the time to point me in the right direction. This is a subject that I'm always interested in reading more about. And if an "academic" got so bent out of shape over your opinions, they must not be very secure in their research, lol. I'd quoted the article and the author had obviously been googling their citation counts, they really hadn't like my take on their research or my interpretation. Which was that it was all a bunch of hooey - because really world of warcraft has the worst (worst!) character model engine in the industry at the time... i mean you could only pick about 4-5 options for any one thing hair/face etc and really it was more like getting pre-packaged toons then crafting an avatar. Not being gamers the article authors hadn't known the sorts of question I felt you needed to ask a warcraft player to find out where/if their esteem was invested in the game online - achievements, virtual money, virtual possessions and gear, raid progression, guild responsibility, online social friends... and I felt they had focused completely on look of the avatar and role-played character in comparison to the real life situation - no look at gaming compulsion issues or the persons mental state RL either.... thus the research felt really shallow to a peep from on the inside ... and I guess I didn't think an academic would take one bloggers opinion so seriously they would evangelize on the gamers blog O_o I was too new to blogging and it scared the pants off me. At the time all I could think is - "no no I don't agree" and I responded off the cuff after a 5min read - perhaps I would have a different opinion these days :P [http://realityafk.wordpress.com/2008/07/11/found-this%E2%80%9D-says-the-librarian-dropping-the-article-on-the-desk-like-a-bone-she-just-dug-up/]Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6255923302093840458.post-82166257638457936472013-10-11T11:47:27.052-07:002013-10-11T11:47:27.052-07:00Happy to do it. That has to be frustrating.

Maybe I just haven't found the right outfit to inspire an undeniable need to hunt down all the pieces, lol.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06760834047864895411noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6255923302093840458.post-27967229793413379832013-10-11T11:44:32.665-07:002013-10-11T11:44:32.665-07:00I get that my opinion is of the minority. But I think the guy on Google+ that inspired this post put it better than I have and he said that toons have lost their individuality with account-wide mounts. Thinking back to my Rivendare's Deathcharger, I totally get his point because I use this mount strictly for my undead rogue despite the fact that it's available to all. I'm feeling this for faction mounts too.

Your idea of making level restrictions for mounts is a pretty good one. Cata mounts available for level 80-85 toons, MoP mounts available for level 85-90 toons and so on. I could get on board with that.

Thanks for the comment. :)Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06760834047864895411noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6255923302093840458.post-43118073104971112152013-10-10T08:42:18.948-07:002013-10-10T08:42:18.948-07:00In my opinion, a good game never really runs out o...In my opinion, a good game never really runs out of stuff to do. So the "downtime" needed to get the mount for other alts would, hypothetically, be non-existent. But that's not realistic. All games have downtime to some extent. But really, the mount isn't just HANDED to you. You did work for it. On another character, but still, you climbed that mountain to get it already, and so it should be available for everyone else on your account. However... I see your point on watching a fledgling new character riding these mounts... my proposal: level restrictions on mounts. Sure, make it account-wide, but you want your alt to be able to ride it? Then level his butt up there! This creates a way for you to re-earn the mount as a reward again by giving incentive to level the alt.

I'm not an alt-o-holic, though. Instead of multiple characters, I just play multiple games, which is a whole other issue... but at least level requirements on rewards would be a nice compromise, imo.Ochohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11156181787884658756noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6255923302093840458.post-11956023113815051452013-10-09T16:59:43.866-07:002013-10-09T16:59:43.866-07:00Ooh! thank you so much for mentioning me!! :)

It seems to be that way when you get a group together, no matter the reason for the group. My last guild had very little drama, but then again, there were hardly ever more than 5 people online at one time, lol. And we weren't a progressive guild. I don't mind a little drama, but I can't stand the people that take the game too seriously and want to rush, rush, rush, through content. What's the point of hurrying? Too bad you're out of the game. Must be one great guy. ;) Good luck to you and sincerely thanks for reading and commenting. People get mad when they don't get raid spots, raiders get upset when lousy players are in their raid, and guild/raid leaders get overwhelmed by people complaining and pestering them.

Now there were positive times too, like actually getting an encounter down for the first time felt amazing. Helping that lousy player become better.

My biggest problems with progressive guilds were when I was dating a guy who... wasn't very good. This caused a lot of frustration for me, because Raid leaders had a tendency to want me in their runs but not him. We ended up fighting a lot over it, but he refused to try and get better. He thought his way was the right way to play (aka without any addons). People can play without addons sure, but when you're healing for a fifth of the next worst person maybe you should consider downloading some...

I really miss raid guilds. I have more good memories than bad, but am in a position where the guy I'm dating doesn't play WoW and I don't want to commit to a raid schedule that would take away from time with him. :)Susihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07332661566542606851noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6255923302093840458.post-59210702940083310692013-05-13T20:53:17.352-07:002013-05-13T20:53:17.352-07:00Well, I let my subscription go for about three mon...Well, I let my subscription go for about three months and I've been back to it for about three weeks now. To even consider entering the raiding tiers, I had to give up a lot of my free time and then start playing the game the way others wanted me to, changing around my builds and whatnot. I felt like in order to proceed, I had to give up the reasons why I played in the first place. So, I did give up... on WoW. Because the game fostered that kind of behavior... but others don't. Instead, I went on to other games and haven't looked back. :)Ochohttp://casualaggro.wordpress.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6255923302093840458.post-86170631232305202242012-11-09T11:43:40.886-08:002012-11-09T11:43:40.886-08:00Eh.
